They are famous for the big grill guard. | Here we see one of Earl Paddocks fine KW T800's. There is no mistaking a Paddock truck with there black and red paint and the deep chrome bumper and every truck has the Paddock trade mark five lights built into the bumper which has been a tradition since the early eighties.Paddock is a medium sized flatbed and van fleet based out of Stoney Creek Ontario. Some may reconize the bear in the Paddock logo as it is like the Hayes logo. This is because Earl Paddock was the Hayes dealer in Hamilton which was called Central Equipment. It is always nice to see such a sharp fleet stay true to it roots for over 35 years. This pic was one of many Kenworths they brought to Fergus in 2003.
I was at a huge truck show in Northern Quebec that I entered the Sleeman truck in the show and also competed in the hill climb drag race with my Freightliner. ICL Mack truck and trailer belonged to J.R. Andrews a long time ICL broker from Woodstock Ontario. This highly polished showwinner was taken 18 years ago at the first year of the Fergus Truck Show. Typical to an ICL broker notice the nicely painted up trailer and wheels all nicely painted. All though the ICL company trucks were plain with no chrome their many owner operators sure made up for it with these very fancy rigs in the seventies and eighties.
![]() |
This Peterbilt cabover was taken by Doug McKenzie. This picture was taken in 1978 by Doug at the Cayuga truck races and these red and burgundy were very typical to the ICL brokers running in the seventies this truck was very fancy for the time with the nice gold lettering and striping. True to being a 352H cabover Pete this unit was equipped with a KTA 450 Cummins. That is why Pete made these extra high units to put in the larger rad for cooling this large horsepower motor. Notice the fancy chrome 2 hole buds on the drive wheels almost unheard of in Ontario in the mid seventies. The reason for the cast spoke Dayton wheels on the front axle is because this was a 14,000 or 16,000 pound front axle and Alcoa had not made a heavy duty aluminum rim for this axle. This rim did not come to be till the late eighties. That is why on some Manitoulin trucks they run spoke steel on the steers and aluminum buds on the drives. The reason this Pete was high horsepower and large axle because it pulled huge loads of steel in Ontario and Michigan on Atrain flatbeds.
| A Note About The Spoke Wheels from Doug McKenzie: As Chris has stated, a strong enough disc wheel hadn't been developed at this time. In this instance, the Pete would probably have an 18,000 lb front axle which required a 6-spoke wheel and wide rims. Due to a re-alignment of front axle weights in accordance with the failed FMVSS-121, all front axles and their respective capacities were re-aligned. 1974's axles such as 12,000 lb, 16,000 lb, 18,000 lb and 20,000 lb were all dropped in capacity withe the new standard. A 20,000 lb axle would become an 18,000 lb axle which the Pete probably had. |
